Seasoning a clay pot before first use is very important. Proper seasoning strengthens the pot, prevents cracking, reduces leakage, and improves durability. Follow this traditional method to prepare your clay cookware for healthy, flavour-rich cooking.
Step 1: Rinse Thoroughly (No Soap)

Rinse the clay pot and lid thoroughly using plain water to remove dust and loose clay particles.
Do not use soap or harsh detergents, as clay is porous and can absorb chemicals.
Use a coconut scrubber or green scrub pad for gentle cleaning. Avoid using a steel scrubber, as it may damage the surface.
Step 2: Soak for 12 Hours

Fully submerge the clay pot and lid in clean water.
Let them soak for 12 hours so the clay absorbs enough moisture. Ensure both the pot and lid are completely immersed in water.
This step helps prevent cracks during the first cooking process.
Step 3: Air Dry in Shade

After soaking, remove the pot and allow excess water to drip off.
Place it in a shaded, well-ventilated area and let it air dry for about 6 hours.
Do not dry it under direct sunlight at this stage.
Step 4: Apply Oil Generously

Using clean hands or a soft cloth, apply oil generously to:
- The inside of the pot
- The outside surface
- The lid
You can use:
- Sesame oil
- Coconut oil
- Vegetable oil
Make sure the entire surface is well coated.
Step 5: Sun-Dry for 4 Hours

Place the oiled pot under sunlight for about 4 hours.
This allows the clay to absorb the oil deeply, improving strength and longevity.
Step 6: Add Rice Starch Water

Pour rice starch water (the water drained after cooking rice) into the pot.
Leave it overnight. This traditional method helps seal micro pores in the clay and enhances durability.
Step 7: Heat Gradually on Stove

The next day:
- Place the pot (with rice water) on the gas stove.
- Heat on low flame for 15 minutes.
- Increase to medium flame for another 15 minutes.
🔥 Never use high flame suddenly. Clay needs gradual heating.
Step 8: Cool Naturally

Turn off the heat and allow the pot to cool down naturally.
Do not touch or rinse while hot. Sudden temperature change may cause cracks.
Step 9: Final Rinse

Once completely cool:
- Discard the rice water
- Rinse with clean water

Your clay pot is now fully seasoned and ready for cooking delicious, healthy meals.
